Ubuntu performance issues, slow and laggy

laptop specs:

  • processor: 9th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-9750H Processor
  • graphics card: RTX 2060
  • 16gb of ram
  • Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS

I am running the propierty and tested driver from nvidia. (the recommended driver)

i checked the system monitor and see nothing out of the ordinary (i think) but I can't open it when my laptoop freezes ofc

and with laggy i mean sometimes i have to wait 3 minutes for something to open or load or it won't load at all. even with only my browser open. it's the opposite from smooth. not sure what to do. if anyone has an idea on how to fix this problem that would be nice :)

no idea if the problem is snap apps i tried to understand what is is but i have like a 80IQ so I'm not sure what a snap app really is. but i think that's how i install all the programs that are not available in the ubuntu software app

yes I'm dual booting from an USB, a fast one. and starting up does not take a lot of time. (yes I'm running ubuntu on a live usb)

There is no obvious way to fix this problem but you could take the following Precautions , Good Luck!

  • Try increasing the swap size

  • Try a lighter desktop environment such as XFCE .

  • try disabling services that you don't want (You can use Stacer also for that sudo snap install stacer , also make sure not to disable any useful service)

  • Always keep your system updates sudo apt update ; sudo apt upgrade

  • Avoid heavy usage

  • Use cpu freq with power saving mode .

  • Use alternative flavours of ubuntu like XUBUNTU or LUBUNTU

  • Try decreasing configs you made to the desktop (You can use dconf reset -f / (Note this will remove all configs)

  • Use more workspaces rather than opening more then 3 apps in 1 workspace

  • keep your computer clean sudo apt autoremove && sudo apt clean

  • use an old kernel (only use if if it is supported)

  • And at last decrease swapiness.(10 is a good value)

If the problem is after update or kernel update

If that is the case then

  • Open Grub menu (Press ESC or SHIFT key before the boot splash screen appear)

  • From there choose "advanced options for ubuntu"

  • Then choose an older kernel (probably the oldest)

Check if the problem is still there if not then Give me further updates in the comments.

As You mentioned in the question, You are on a live USB this problem will highly depend on the speed of the storage medium you are using to operate ubuntu, So I would recommend installing Ubuntu on SSD

If none of above works then PROBABLY you should Switch to a newer version of ubuntu or Switch to another distro

Also , You said that it is dualbooted so can you see if the problem is also there in windows ?

Also what kind of things(tell the name of specific apps if any) you find slow ?

As you have provided no comments about how and when the problem started, it is really hard to figure out what can be a correct solution, If none of above works then please edit your question and add the answers of these questions

  • Since when is the issue

  • What you think caused the issue

  • What specific thing are slow ?

  • What kind of special services and packages you use ?
